Scan the full frontier before your next dig
After a blank area opens, the most useful clues sit on the boundary between revealed and covered tiles. Move your eyes around that entire frontier before selecting anything. The first clue you notice may have several unknown neighbors, while a clue a few tiles away may be complete enough to prove a flag or a safe dig immediately.
A simple scan order prevents missed moves: first look for clues whose covered-neighbor count equals the number of moles they still need; then look for clues that already touch the correct number of flags; finally compare overlapping clues. This order finds direct deductions before you spend time on more abstract relationships.
Treat every flag as a claim you can defend
A flag changes how you read every nearby number. It also powers the shortcut that opens unflagged neighbors around a completed clue. Because one weak flag can contaminate several deductions, use flags for certainty rather than suspicion. If a tile is only one of two possible mole locations, leave both covered until another clue distinguishes them.
When a contradiction appears, audit the newest flag first. A clue showing “1” cannot legitimately touch two flags. Remove flags until every revealed clue has at most its displayed count, then rebuild the reasoning from the smallest, most constrained neighborhood.
Use Flag mode for a cluster
When a section produces two or three certain moles at once, switch to Flag mode and mark the group. Switch back to Dig before continuing. On desktop, right-clicking individual tiles is quicker and avoids a mode change; on touchscreens, the long-press shortcut is useful when you need only one flag.
Reliable clue patterns
The completed number
A “2” touching two flags has no more adjacent moles. Every other covered neighbor is safe.
The exact remainder
A “3” touching one flag and exactly two other covered tiles proves that both covered tiles are moles.
The subset comparison
If all candidates beside a “1” also touch a “2,” the “2” needs one additional mole outside that shared group.
The edge squeeze
A clue beside board gaps has fewer active neighbors. Count only the visible garden tiles, which often turns an uncertain clue into an exact remainder.
Worked comparison
Imagine two neighboring clues. The first is a “1” touching covered tiles A and B. The second is a “2” touching A, B, and C. The first clue says exactly one of A or B is a mole. The second needs two moles across the same pair plus C. Therefore C must be a mole. You still do not know whether A or B is the other mole, but flagging C may complete a third clue and continue the chain.
The reverse can prove safety. If a “1” touches A and B, while another “1” touches A, B, and C, then C cannot contain a mole. Both clues already depend on the same single mole within A and B.
Let the shaped board reduce your candidates
Molesweeper levels contain holes, notches, branches, and diagonal edges. A blank space outside the active shape is not a covered tile. It cannot contain a mole and does not contribute to a number. Trace the outline of the active gold or revealed tiles, especially where a clue appears near a narrow neck in the board.
Narrow branches often isolate small clue groups. Solve those groups before returning to a dense center because they have fewer overlapping possibilities. Conversely, a broad central clue may be more useful after edge flags remove some of its candidates.

Protect hearts without becoming too cautious
Three hearts mean one mistake does not erase the whole level, but they are not extra hints. A random dig may reveal useful information, yet it can also remove the margin you need for a genuine counting error later. Before taking a risk, ask whether every visible frontier has been scanned and whether one unresolved pair can be approached from another side.
If you do reveal a mole, treat it as a confirmed location. Recount each adjacent clue with that mole included. The loss can still create safe moves around it. Do not immediately restart unless the board has become confusing; continuing is often the fastest way to understand where the earlier reasoning failed.
Use hints to create information, not skip thinking
A hint opens a safe tile or connected safe region. It does not solve a specific flag question, so its best use is when the current revealed frontier offers no clear deduction. The new opening creates additional number clues that may resolve an uncertain pair from another direction.
Save at least one hint for late in a large board. Early blank regions often generate many direct deductions, while the final covered pocket can contain a relationship that is hard to break. On compact early levels, using a hint immediately is fine if your goal is learning how opened regions and boundary numbers behave.
A five-step reset when you feel stuck
- Check that every flag is compatible with every touching clue.
- For each clue, subtract adjacent flags and count remaining covered neighbors.
- Find equal or nested groups of covered neighbors and compare their remaining counts.
- Inspect notches and inactive spaces along the shaped board edge.
- If no move is supported, use a hint rather than spending a heart on an unstructured guess.
When the board has accumulated too many speculative flags, restarting can be more productive than trying to remember why each mark was placed. The same level shape remains, but the hidden arrangement is created after your next first dig, giving you a fresh deduction path.
